What is the function of heat shrink kits in a well water system?
In general, heat shrink tubing is used to insulate electrical components, like wire, from external factors such as moisture, dust, abrasion, and other objects which could cause damage.
In terms of a well water system, Boshart’s heat shrink splice kits are used to make an underwater electrical connection between the leads on the pump motor and the pump cable. The connection is made by cutting the cables in a staggered position to minimize the cables outer diameter after completion. This is important to reduce the risk of damaging the splice due to abrasion when lowering the pump into the well. Each conductor is spliced by using a small metal connector which accepts a wire into each end called a stakon. Additional information on making proper splices is available in the resources below.
In summary, heat shrink kits are used in well water systems to:
- Create an underwater electrical connection between the pump motor and cable
- Reduce the risk of damaging the splice
