Filter Cartridge

How many times can I wash my pleated filter cartridge?

The answer to this question is that the number of washes varies widely. The number of washes can range from 1 to 14 depending on the application the pleated filter cartridge is being used in. In this article we will cover the main applications which are whole house potable water systems, either private well or municipal water supply, and pool and spa systems.

Potable Water Systems

The typical water filter should be changed every 6 months. If your water quality is poor, changing it out sooner is better than later and a 3–4 month changeout cycle may be beneficial. The 6 month period is based on general filtration practices which conclude that at 6 months the filter needs to be changed to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and algae which could affect your water quality. The benefit of washing is realized during this 6 month period in systems where heavy sediment loads clog the filter.

Example #1 – If the sediment load clogs the filter every month causing water pressure to drop, the pleated cartridge can be washed to remove the sediment. This would help you to regain the desired flow rate and would give you 5 washings before changing out is required.

Example #2 - If the sediment loads clog the filter in 2 months causing water pressure to drop, the pleated cartridge can be washed to remove the sediment. This would help you to regain the desired flow rate and would give you 2 washings before changing out is required.

Example #3 - If the sediment loads clog the filter in 3 months causing water pressure to drop, the pleated cartridge can be washed to remove the sediment. This would help you to regain the desired flow rate and would give you only 1 washing before changing out is required.

Pool & Spa Systems

One should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for filter cleaning or replacement. This information is to be used as a guide only. In pool and spa applications, a pleated cartridge filter should be cleaned every 3-4 months, but this can vary based on factors such as pool size, debris, and sunscreen usage. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations but do not exceed six months between cleanings. Generally, most people replace their filter cartridges about every 3-5 years. However, don’t use the amount of time that has passed as the only determining factor for cleaning frequency. Monitor the performance of your filter. The time period may be longer or shorter depending on the demand on the cartridge. Generally, pool filter cartridges need to be cleaned when the pressure gauge rises 8 PSI above normal operating pressure. When the time frame in between this increase in pressure begins to shorten significantly, the filter cartridge probably needs to be replaced.

Example: If you clean the filter every 3 months over 5 years you will be able to wash the cartridge 14 times.

Limiting Factors:

Always thoroughly inspect the filter cartridge every time you clean it. Damage to the filter cartridge will reduce the filtering efficiency. If you have tears or rips in the fabric, or if there are cracks in the rubber end cap of the cartridge; it needs to be replaced.
