Are 304SS and 316SS threaded fittings and pipe nipples food grade?

Yes, depending on the application 304SS and 316SS fittings and pipe nipples are food safe. Food grade stainless steel is resistant to wear and tear and has high heat resistance. Stainless steel is beneficial in the food industry because it is corrosion resistant, strong, easy to clean, non-reactive, and involves low maintenance.

316SS has more nickel and less chromium than 304SS, as well as 2-3% molybdenum. This makes 316SS more corrosion and chemical resistant, especially in saline, chloride, or highly acidic environments. Prolonged exposure to salt can eat away at 304SS. 316SS may be superior in food applications where corrosion and high salt content is a concern.

Threaded pipe fittings may not be suitable for some food processing applications and the project may require butt/socket weld or clamp type sanitary stainless steel fittings to ensure that the system meets the washdown requirements.

IMPORTANT: The end user or installer assumes the sole responsibility to ensure that the product meets all the applicable national and local codes and regulations for the application in which the product will be used. The AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) has the final say as to whether a product or material is suitable for the application.
