Why is my filter clogging?
If your filter cartridge is clogging sooner than expected, it is usually an indication that the filtration system is not properly matched to the application. Premature cartridge plugging is most commonly caused by one of three conditions:
1. The filter is undersizedA filter housing or cartridge that is too small for the application's flow rate or sediment load has a limited dirt-holding capacity. As a result, the cartridge fills with sediment more quickly and requires more frequent replacement.
Selecting a larger filter cartridge or housing can increase dirt-holding capacity, improve flow, and extend cartridge service life.
2. The micron rating is too fineUsing a cartridge with a micron rating that is finer than necessary can cause it to capture excessive amounts of sediment, resulting in rapid plugging and increased pressure loss.
In some applications, selecting a cartridge with a slightly higher micron rating can improve cartridge life while still providing satisfactory filtration.
3. A pre-filter is neededApplications with heavy sediment loads often benefit from multiple stages of filtration. Installing a pre-filter with a larger micron rating ahead of the final filter removes larger particles first, reducing the load on the finer filter cartridge and significantly extending its service life.
What is normal cartridge life?Under normal operating conditions, a properly sized filter cartridge should typically provide approximately four to six months of service before requiring replacement. If cartridges are plugging much sooner than expected, the filtration system should be evaluated to determine whether the filter size, micron rating, or filtration arrangement is appropriate for the application.
Water testing can also help identify the type and amount of sediment present, making it easier to select the most effective filtration system.
