Mechanical Float Switch

Standard Action vs. Reverse Action Float Switches

Standard Action vs. Reverse Action Float Switches

Contact Actions are referred to as:

#1 STANDARD ACTION - “Contacts Close on Liquid Rise” (Example 9036DG2)

or

#2 REVERSE ACTION - “Contacts Open on Liquid Rise” (Example 9036DG2R)

NOTE: The switches will look the same from the outside, they can be identified by the I.D. label inside the cover or by checking if the contacts are open or closed as explained below.

#1 - Standard Action Applications:

A standard action switch is used in “emptying” applications, where the pump is required to start when the liquid level rises and reaches a predetermined level set by the stops on the float and rod assembly.

The pump will remain on until the water level is reduced to the point where the weight of the float will pull the switch lever down to open the contacts and shut of the pump.

Commonly used industry terminology for describing Standard Action float switches for emptying applications….

  • Pump Down
  • Contacts Close on Liquid Rise
  • Contacts Normally Open

#2 – Reverse Action Applications:

A reverse action switch is used in filling applications where the pump is required to start when the liquid level drops to a predetermined level set by the stops on the float and rod assembly.

The pump will remain on until the water level increases to the point where the buoyancy of the float will move the switch lever up to open the contacts and shut of the pump.

Ordering Information: When ordering a factory installed modification, add the form number to the end of the float switch catalog number. For example, to select a 9036DG2 switch with reverse action, order 9036DG2R.

Commonly used industry terminology for describing Reverse Action float switches for filling applications….

  • Pump Up
  • Contacts Open on Liquid Rise
  • Contacts Normally Closed
