Thread Sealants

Is GRAY MAGIC thread sealant considered to be "Food Grade"?

Is GRAY MAGIC thread sealant considered to be food grade?

Unfortunately, we do not have a “FDA Approval” on the GRAY MAGIC compound. We have avoided the plant issues with our NSF 14 and NSF 61 approvals. The ingredients are considered GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) which has allowed GRAY MAGIC into the food processing industry.

Here is a good reference to that exemption:

In this NSF article it states that "Ingredients with generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status are also considered acceptable for food-grade lubricants by the FDA."

Plant inspectors have typically allowed use of the products in the plant with the NSF approvals. Many large food and beverage processors actually prefer and specify our compounds since they don’t transfer taste and odors as well.

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects establishes the benchmark criteria for evaluating health effects of many drinking water system components, including plastic piping.

NSF/ANSI 14: Plastics Piping System Components and Related Materials establishes the minimum physical, performance and health effects requirements for plastics piping system components and related materials.

Ultimately the final decision as to whether the sealant is acceptable is the plant inspector’s call.
