Does a gas connector require maintenance?
Gas connectors do not require scheduled maintenance. However, there are some very important conditions that they must be protected from to avoid corrosion or physical damage to the gas connector. NOTE: The installation of a new gas connector must be done by a qualified gas fitter, always follow ALL the manufacturer's instructions.
LEAK TESTING: When leak testing, it MUST be done using a non-corrosive gas leak detection fluid (such as Big Bubbles gas leak). NEVER use dish washing detergent, bath soap or other household chemicals that contain chlorides.
NEVER REUSE: Gas connectors must not be reused! If a new appliance is purchased or an existing appliance is moved, a new connector must be installed.
NO KINKS: Gas connectors are designed for occasional movement after installation. They are primarily for servicing or cleaning an appliance. Always move the appliance taking great care, DO NOT kink, twist or bend the connector smaller than 1½" – 2” internal diameter (approximately the diameter of a golf or tennis ball). Sharp bends must be avoided, absolutely no right-angle bends.
LIMITED MOVEMENT: Never use with an appliance or equipment that is mounted on wheels, casters, or rollers, that permit the appliance to move readily about. Flexible gas connector tubing is intended for limited movement of the appliance after installation. Repeated bending, flexing or extreme vibration will cause metal fatigue, cracks, or holes that could result in a dangerous gas leak, these conditions must be avoided. NOTE: Normal operation of a clothes dryer does not constitute extreme vibration or movement.
PROTECT FROM PHYSICAL CONTACT: DO NOT allow the connector to come into contact with foreign objects such as wall studs, electrical wiring, copper or iron pipe, paneling, sheet metal, etc.
PROTECT FROM CHEMICALS: To prevent corrosion of non-coated stainless steel gas connectors DO NOT allow strong cleaning solutions or chemicals to come in contact with the connector. These include acids, solvents, solder fluxes with zinc chlorides, ammonia, chlorinated chemicals, and any liquid with chlorine such as laundry bleach or dish detergent.
CORROSION RESISTANT OPTION
Yellow coating has been engineered and applied to the outer surface of the non-coated stainless steel to gas connectors. It provides added corrosion protection to withstand prolonged exposure to common household cleaning products, as well as chemicals used in plumbing repair and masonry. This yellow coating also protects against the effects of harsh environmental influences such as salt and UV rays.
If you notice any damage of any kind, such as kinks or corrosion, you should have the connector inspected or replaced by a licensed gas fitter.
WARNING - If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the main valve and call a licensed gas fitter or local gas company to test for any leaks and fix any problems.
