Pipe Fittings

Can I use Schedule 40 or 80 PVC or plastic fittings to build a compressed air piping system?

Can I use Schedule 40 or 80 PVC or plastic fittings to build a compressed air piping system?

No! As a rule, PVC or plastic fittings in general (ABS, Nylon or Polypropylene) should never be used in compressed air piping systems.

CAUTION: Compressed air must not be used to pressure test a plastic system. Compressed air contains a large amount of stored energy that presents a serious safety hazard should the piping system fail for any reason.

WARNING: Do not attempt to use common black ABS DWV pipe and fittings as they are not designed for this type of application.

EXCEPTION: There are manufacturers that produce plastic pipe and fittings from a special grade plastic material that are designed for use in compressed air systems.

IMPORTANT: It is the end user's responsibility to ensure the plastic pipe and fittings for compressed air systems are clearly marked, identified, and approved for this type of application and meet all the applicable codes and regulations.
