Compression Coupling

Are the GCC Series Compression Couplings suitable for suitable for steam applications?

Are the GCC Series Compression Couplings suitable for suitable for steam applications?

No! The GCC Series couplings are not suitable for steam service, they are only rated for a maximum temperature of 140°F (60°C) which is far below the temperature of steam, when water is heated at atmospheric pressure, its temperature rises until it reaches 212°F (100°C), the highest temperature at which water can exist at this pressure. Additional heat does not raise the temperature but converts the water to steam.

Possible Solution:

There are high temperature compression couplings made by DRESSER, we suggest you investigate the DRESSER Style 165 PLUS-TEMP Boltless Compression Couplings & Fittings for use on steel piping systems.

The system designer should reach out to DRESSER to see if they endorse the Style 165 PLUS-TEMP™ Compression Couplings for steam. They are rated for elevated temperature service up to 350° F (176.6°F) on air, water, fuel, lube, coolant, process, and product lines. Also, on such equipment as compressors and engines, hot water boilers, industrial furnaces and ovens, air conditioning and air handling installations, locomotives, and stationary power systems.

CAUTION: They do not specifically mention “STEAM” - Saturated Steam is 350° at 125 psi. It is the sole responsibility of the system designer or end user to verify that the product is suitable for the application and that it meets all the applicable national and local plumbing / building codes. Confirmation regarding the suitability for use in a steam application must come directly from DRESSER. Boshart cannot advise on whether the Style 165 product is rated for steam.

NOTE: Boshart does not offer these DRESSER - PLUS-TEMP™ compression fittings.
