Why is water testing important before selecting a filter?

Water testing is the first and most important step in selecting a water filtration system. A proper water test identifies specific water quality concerns, determines the type of contaminants and/or bacteria that may be present.

Many contaminants, such as bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, and lead, cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. The only reliable way to determine whether they are present is through laboratory water testing. Regular testing is recommended for all private well owners to ensure the water is safe and to help select the appropriate treatment equipment.

Biological Contaminants

These can pose health risks and often require disinfection.

  • E. coli
  • Coliform
  • Hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium)
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Hydrogen sulfide (sulfur)
  • Nitrates and nitrites
  • Arsenic
  • Lead and copper (typically from household plumbing)
  • Chlorides
  • Sodium
  • Fluoride (naturally occurring in some areas)
  • Pesticides and herbicides (where agricultural runoff is present)

Chemical Contaminants

Water testing will also identify if there are any chemical contaminants present. These may occur naturally or can be introduced through human activity.

Aesthetic Contaminants

These mainly affect the taste, odor, or appearance of the water.

    • Tannins (yellow or tea-colored water)
    • Iron bacteria
    • Manganese bacteria
    • Organic matter causing taste and odor issues

Most Common Well Water Issues

For most private wells, the contaminants homeowners encounter most often are:

    • Sediment (sand, silt, dirt)
    • Hardness (calcium and magnesium)
    • Iron
    • Manganese
    • Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor)
    • Bacteria (total coliform and E. coli)
    • Nitrates (particularly in agricultural areas)

If the water is microbiologically safe, then traditional sediment filtration can be used to remove particulate or activated carbon filtration can be used to address taste and odor concerns. However, if the water testing concludes that the water is not microbiologically safe, a water treatment system is required. We recommend that you reach out to a qualified water treatment specialist in your area to determine the system that is best suited for your water condition. The systems may include, and are not limited to the following:

  • UV filtration (Ultraviolet)
  • RO filtration (reverse osmosis)
  • Chlorination systems

It is important to remember that water quality cannot be accurately determined by taste, smell, or appearance alone. Water that looks clear and tastes fine may still contain harmful bacteria, dissolved minerals, or other contaminants that require treatment. Likewise, water with an unpleasant taste, odor, or color does not always indicate what type of filtration is needed.

Without water testing, it can be difficult to select the correct filter cartridge, micron rating, or filter size. An improperly selected filter may result in poor performance, reduced flow, premature cartridge plugging, or unnecessary replacement costs.

By testing the water before choosing a filtration system, the filter can be properly matched to the application, helping to achieve the desired water quality while maximizing filter performance and service life.
