Where are “Stop & Waste Valves” used?

Stop and waste valves are typically used in a drain system to provide a means to winterize outdoor hose bibbs which are not of a “Frost-Free” or “Non-Freeze” wall hydrant design. It is crucial that all supply lines to outdoor valves are drained and winterized for the cold season to prevent the valve and/or supply pipe from freezing and bursting.

What is a drain system?

The drain system requires either a Stop & Waste (Drain) Valve or a Ball with Drain installed inside the home in the heated/no freeze zone. These valves have a drain cap that can be opened to allow air into the supply line. This allows the water to be drained out of the supply line that goes out through the wall to the hose bibb faucet when the cold weather arrives.

Possible valve options with a drain feature:

1. Stop and Waste valves are multi-turn shut-off valves. See series 0844, 0844C, and 0844CPR.

2. Quarter-Turn Ball valves with drain valves are a great option. See series 082WD, 082WDC,082CP, and 0821WDP.
