PVC Pipe

Do I need to use PVC primer when making Sch. 40 or 80 solvent weld connections?

The answer to this question may be YES or NO!

However, the use of primer has always been considered the best practice.

There are many quality brands of primers and cements available. They are often sold as a Handy Pack, 2-in-1 Pack or Combo Pack.

That being said, the need for using a primer depends entirely on the directions provided by the manufacturer of the PVC cement. It is very important to read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Many manufacturers now offer ONE-STEP cements which do not require the use of primer! One of the manufacturers who offer both options would be a good resource for information to learn how the two options compare.

There has always been debate on whether a primer is necessary. The answer may vary depending on who you ask.

For example, BLACK SWAN states: Purple Primer can be used with all types, schedules, and classes of PVC and CPVC pipes and fittings. It has a low VOC formulation. In most cases a successful solvent cement joint can be made without using a primer. But, if you want to increase the probability of making a successful joint, using a primer is the thing to do.

Conclusion:

Boshart suggests the use of a primer UNLESS the product is clearly marked as a one step solvent that does not require primer!

We recommend that you reach out to the manufacturer to get information regarding their products.  Specifically, to get information on how the strength and integrity of the joints compare when using both primer and cement versus using a one step product.
