We often get asked if our quarter turn wall hydrants have ceramic sealing discs. These inquiries are resulting from customers who have experienced product failures due to ceramic sealing discs used in the manufacture of some brands of wall hydrants / non freeze lawn faucets.
While we have learned that ceramic discs tend to crack and cause hydrants to fail, it has become apparent that ceramic discs can be negatively impacted by hard water, making them less durable. Boshart cannot validate whether this is a significant problem as we have not sold the product with ceramic discs, therefore we do not have first-hand knowledge. However, since customers are adamant about sourcing a wall hydrant that does not have ceramic disc components, there must be validity to the issue.
We have a solution:
The Boshart Model 08QTWH Non-Freeze Wall Hydrant is manufactured with POM valve disc material. POM is an ACETAL copolymer, sometimes referred to as Celcon® which is a registered trade name for the same material.
POM material has a very good performance record which is known for outstanding wear and slip properties, long-term anti-fatigue properties, toughness, and creep resistance as well as excellent resistance to moisture, solvents, and strong alkalis.
